Terms of Use

Last updated: 4 July 2026

These terms govern your use of the Rivanaut app. Please read them carefully — section 3 (safety) is especially important, because Rivanaut is a planning aid and not an official navigation system.

1. Acceptance of these terms

By downloading, installing or using Rivanaut (“the app”), you agree to these Terms of Use (“Terms”) and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app. You must be at least 16 years old, or the age of digital consent in your country, to use Rivanaut.

2. The service

Rivanaut provides charts, vessel-aware route planning, live navigation aids, harbour and place information, water-level readings, official notices to skippers (via EuRIS where available), live vessel traffic (AIS), weather forecasts, an anchor watch, a logbook, cost tracking, optional Apple Watch and Wear OS companions and home-screen widget status, private route share links, an optional public community route catalogue with likes, curated trip-idea templates, crowdsourced lock-wait reports, POI reviews and photos, and other optional community features for boaters on inland waterways. The app is available on iOS and Android. Features, data sources and availability may change over time, and some features require an account or an active subscription.

3. Safety disclaimer — please read

Rivanaut is a planning and assistance tool, not an officially approved navigation system. Always check current water levels, closures, locks, bridge clearances, official notices to skippers and local regulations before and during your trip. Charts and data may be incomplete, outdated or inaccurate.

You are solely responsible for the safe navigation and operation of your vessel and for the safety of everyone on board. Maintain a proper lookout and carry the official charts and equipment required in your area. Do not rely on the app — including routing, depths, clearances, the anchor watch, AIS traffic, EuRIS notices or weather — as your only source of navigational or safety information. The anchor watch and alerts depend on your device’s sensors, battery, connectivity and the operating system permitting background activity, and may fail to trigger. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we accept no liability for decisions made or actions taken based on the app.

4. Accounts

Some features require an account. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for activity under your account. Provide accurate information and keep it up to date. You may permanently delete your account at any time from within the app (My Profile → Delete account); this irreversibly removes your account and all associated data (see the Privacy Policy).

5. Subscriptions & free trial

Full access to Rivanaut is offered as an auto-renewing subscription, which may include a free trial. Billing is handled by the store where you downloaded the app:

  • Apple App Store (iOS). Payment is charged to your Apple ID. Subscriptions renew automatically for the same period and price unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel in your Apple ID settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Refunds are subject to Apple’s policies.
  • Google Play (Android). Payment is charged to your Google account. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled before the end of the current period in Google Play’s subscription settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Refunds are subject to Google’s policies.
  • Free trial. If a free trial is offered, you will not be charged during the trial. It converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel in time through the relevant store. Any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.
  • Prices. Prices may vary by region and may change; we will seek your consent for increases where required. Current pricing is shown in the app before purchase.
  • EU consumers — immediate access. If you are a consumer in the EU/EEA and start a subscription or free trial, you expressly agree that digital content and services begin immediately and acknowledge that you may lose your statutory 14-day right of withdrawal once performance has begun, to the extent permitted by law.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • break the law or infringe others’ rights when using the app;
  • upload or post content that is unlawful, misleading, abusive, hateful or that violates others’ privacy or intellectual property (for example in reviews, shared trips or public routes);
  • publish public routes that are intentionally inaccurate, unsafe or misleading;
  • harass other users or misuse live-location, community-route or like features;
  • submit false or misleading crowdsourced infrastructure reports, reviews or route information;
  • scrape, overload, reverse-engineer, or attempt to disrupt or gain unauthorised access to the app or its data services;
  • resell or commercially exploit the app or its data except as permitted by the underlying data licences.

We may remove content or suspend accounts that violate these Terms.

7. Your content

You retain ownership of the content you create (such as reviews, photos, shared trips, public routes, infrastructure reports and profile details). By submitting content, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide licence to host, store, moderate and display it as needed to operate the relevant features. We may remove or reject content that violates these Terms or our moderation rules. Public routes are listed only if you opt in; you can unpublish them at any time. Reviews and photos may be held for moderation before publication. You are responsible for the content you submit and confirm you have the right to share it. Routes, trip ideas and crowdsourced wait-time reports are planning aids only — you remain responsible for verifying that information is accurate, safe and lawful.

8. Third-party data & services

Rivanaut uses third-party map, weather, water-level, vessel-traffic and other data (including OpenStreetMap, OpenFreeMap, OpenSeaMap, Open-Meteo, national gauge networks, EuRIS, AISStream.io and, for some place details, Google Places data shown under Google’s terms). This data is provided “as is”, may be inaccurate or unavailable, and is subject to the respective providers’ terms and licences. Attribution is shown in the app. We do not control and are not responsible for third-party services. See our Privacy Policy for how data is processed.

9. Intellectual property

The app, its design, the Rivanaut name and logo, and all related software are owned by the developer and protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the app for its intended purpose. You may not copy, modify, distribute or create derivative works except as allowed by law.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

The app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or uninterrupted or error-free operation. We do not warrant that charts, routes, depths, clearances, water levels, AIS traffic or forecasts are accurate, complete or current.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, the app — including any navigational, safety or financial decision based on it. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law (such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud). Where liability cannot be excluded but can be limited, it is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the 12 months before the claim.

12. Termination

You may stop using the app at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms or to comply with the law. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination (including sections 3, 7, 9, 10 and 11) will continue to apply.

13. App store terms

Apple App Store (iOS). Rivanaut on iOS is distributed through the Apple App Store and your use is also subject to Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA). If these Terms conflict with that EULA, that EULA governs to the extent of the conflict. You acknowledge that these Terms are between you and the developer, not Apple, and that Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them.

Google Play (Android). Rivanaut on Android is distributed through Google Play and your use is also subject to Google Play’s terms and the Google Play Terms of Service. You acknowledge that these Terms are between you and the developer, not Google, and that Google is not responsible for the app or its content.

14. Governing law & EU consumers

These Terms are governed by the laws of Germany, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and subject to any mandatory consumer-protection rights you have in your country of residence.

If you are a consumer in the EU/EEA, you may use the European Commission’s Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform for out-of-court dispute settlement. We are neither obliged nor willing to participate in dispute-resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board, unless required by law.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the “last updated” date above and, where appropriate, highlighted in the app. Continued use of Rivanaut after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
